Wondering what are the qualifications to do this ??

Probably just an engineering degree.

All the desings I see in Ontario have HRAI and BCIN certification listed.

Thanks for them for looks like a great course in what I'm looking for my only concern is afterwards I would need a bcin number but for that and don't they test you on the entire building code?

I took the residential air design course. If you don't know about sheet metal design, it's pointless and all you get is the ability to slap your number on a print the installers will just laugh at.

The software won't taper down the duct properly the longer the run is. It'll use a 6'' round for 2 cfm of air you should have just removed.

The software makes the drawing for you, but you have to know what stuff to change.

Also they don't teach software. You do it by paper in that hrai class.

Sent u a pm, usually do the house drawings show thr duct size or just the hvac routing .
I assume to get a bcin just for hvac drawings for new builds u would have to know the entire building code for the exam??

- they said pick any size off the sheet. It's your design. Which is why some morons will use 8 inch round for a 4cfm outlet that shouldn't even exist.

As above, you can do drawings with the HRAI courses. They have a 'Residential Air System Design Technician (RASDT) Designation' you get when you take and pass all these courses:

- Residential Ventilation using Section 9.32 of the Building Code
- OR Residential Ventilation using CSA F326
- Residential Heat Loss & Heat Gain Calculations
- Residential Air System Design
- and Residential Commissioning

You learn all the items you ask about above.
As someone else stated, everything is done manually with paper and pencil.
You could automate with software if you know what you are doing.

To submit plans to the city for permit you need a BCIN (for Ontario) # and Errors and Omissions insurance.

BCIN certifications are done through the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing. The exams are about the building code but you do get to use the code book during the exams. You need to pass 2 exams to be qualified under 'HVAC-House'...General Legal/Process and HVAC-House.

I did all the HRAI courses and BCIN back in 2005/2006 when BCIN was mandatory to submit drawings to the city. Took about a year and $$$ to take all those courses.

Yes, BCIN is still required to submit drawings.
BCIN, is an Ontario requirement, so all municipalities follow the same code/forms.
I use CAD and Excel for calculations. Found it easier than some of the software that's out there and could tailor it for the various projects I do.

I'm curious what's the current rate for a hvc drawing on average . !?
